About WATESOL

WATESOL provides a professional community at the intersection of the DC Metropolitan area.  Our members hail from districts and counties within Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.  Our membership includes English language educators, program administrators, pre-service teachers, graduate students, and other language professionals in the areas of K-12 Education, Adult Education, Higher Education, language education research, and program administration, among others.  WATESOL members truly represent the diversity of the TESOL community in the DC Metropolitan Area.  

WATESOL was established in 1970 with 34 charter members.  Today, WATESOL is a successful nonprofit association with around 200 members.

Our Mission

Our mission is to support professionalism and excellence in English language education through:

  • enriching multicultural teaching and learning communities
  • promoting scholarship and research-to-practice connections
  • supporting high-impact professional development
  • advocating for the profession and our learners

Goal 1: Provide high-quality professional development opportunities to WATESOL members  

Objectives:

  • Provide high-quality  professional development events to WATESOL Association members, such as but not limited to, Annual Fall Conference, Professional Development Workshops, and regular Special Interest Group Events
  • Develop new initiatives and virtual engagement strategies to effectively serve WATESOL Association membership

Goal 2: Advocate for and on behalf of English language learners and education professionals.


Objectives:

  • Follow the policy statement of TESOL International Association on advocacy on behalf of English Language professionals and students
  • Maintain and further develop institutional ties and professional presence in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area, nationally, and internationally.
  • Sustain meaningful and long-lasting partnerships with educational providers that advocate for, and on behalf of, those in the TESOL profession.

Goal 3: Facilitate ongoing communication between the WATESOL Association community members.


Objectives:

  • Provide regular monthly updates to membership
  • Publish a regular member-led newsletter
  • Communicate regularly through social media with tools including, but not limited to, Twitter and Facebook.
